The unusual shape can be explained by the focus on minimum noise and emissions when flying in the atmosphere of the home planet.
Anakin Skywalker operated the Naboo fighter in episode I on the control ship of the Droid troops and ended the conflict on Naboo with the destruction of the large space station.
