Star Wars Chewbacca visits Swindon. What a treat!  25/05/2008

The Force will soon be with the people of Swindon - as Chewbacca comes to town.

Peter Mayhew, better known as Chewbacca, Han Solo's faithful sidekick in Star Wars, will be visiting Swindon to sign autographs next Sunday, June 1.

He will be available from noon to 4pm at Famous Retail Ltd in the Brunel centre.

The 7ft 3ins actor has been invited to Swindon by Star Wars enthusiast Luke Kaye, who usually goes by his DJ name of Luke Skywalker.

A massive fan of George Lucas' sci-fi series, Luke has one of the most comprehensive Star Wars memorabilia collections in the country, some of which is kept at his Faringdon Road fancy dress shop.

He said: "I am getting to be good friends with all the Star Wars actors now.

"Peter is coming to spend a week with me at the Royal Bath and West Show and so I thought I'd get him to come and sign some autographs in Swindon.

"I think Chewbacca is seen as one of the most famous Star Wars characters and Peter is certainly one of the actors fans most want to meet.

"He gets absolutely swamped when he goes to the conventions, but he's such a lovely bloke and so down to earth."

The 64-year-old, originally from London, now lives in Texas.

At the time he was cast as the iconic Wookie he was working as a hospital porter at King's College Hospital. He has modestly claimed that he got the job "because the suit fit".

Another Star Wars actor, Rusty Goff, who appeared in the original films as a Jawa, and has also appeared in the Harry Potter series of films, will also be at the signing event.
